I hate the question, “What music do you like to listen to?” I don’t like asking it and the same is true for answering it. The lame response is, “I like/listen to everything!”. Bullshit.
Whenever someone asks me what music I like to listen to, I’ll generally drop them the name of the last CD I bought or what I was just jamming to on my iPod. Childish Gambino’s Because The Internet reached me in an odd manner, similar to someone asking, “What do you like to listen to?”
I took part in one of the largest Secret Santa’s in the world on Reddit.com. An annual tradition that pairs people up randomly with other users and sets a $20 limit. Some people get paired up with celebrities and others completely ignore the $20 limit and go overboard with new computers, exotic trips, and the like. I didn’t want to burden the person that got my username to feel that they needed to get something super expensive or special. I filled out the prerequisite form for some of my likes and dislikes and left it at that.
I got an email with the basic gist of, “I have no idea what to get you.” I responded with a simple, “Get me the last CD that you purchased. Doesn’t matter what it is, that’s what I want.”
Excited with the gamble of what could be arriving in my mailbox soon was fun. I kept wondering what I was going to get from a guy in West Virginia. No idea it would be Childish Gambino’s Because The Internet. I was familiar with Don Glover’s work on Community, seen his stand-up specials, but I hadn’t really heard any of his stuff from his alter ego chosen by a Wu Tang Clan name generator.
All in all, it’s a good album. There are a couple of radio-friendly tracks that help support the album but the main reason I enjoy listening to it is because it was given to me in such a random manner.
