One Fierce Beer Coaster Bloodhound Gang

I stumbled on Bloodhound Gang’s One Fierce Beer Coaster when someone walking around the dorm was singing a lyric from “Fire Water Burn”. I thought they were just boring and slowed down a dance track, singing in a rather monotonous tone. Nope, that’s how the song is supposed to sound. It seems unfair to put Bloodhound Gang in a bin labeled alternative rock. How can a band wish to be taken so seriously when tracks are titled “I Wish I Was Queer So I Could Get Chicks” and “Lift Your Head Up High (And Blow Your Brains Out)”? The titles are just the icing on the cake. Lyrics are funny; riddled with ribald quips and turns of phrase:

Yo yo this hard-core ghetto gangster image takes a lot of practice,
I’m not black like Barry White no I am white like Frank Black is,
So if man is five and the devil is six than that must make me seven,
This honkey’s gone to heaven,
But if I go to hell then I hope I burn well,
I’ll spend my days with J.F.K., Marvin Gaye, Martha Raye, and Lawrence Welk,
And Kurt Cobain, Kojak, Mark Twain and Jimi Hendrix’s poltergeist,
And Webster yeah Emmanuel Lewis cause he’s the anti-christ

Anyone looking for a deeper meaning to their lyrics will have to search and dig deeper. Bloodhound Gang’s lyrics are to be taken at face value, nothing other than some guys hanging out and talking about what they think is funny. You would think that hanging out with some of the crew from MTV’s Jackass would turn them into talentless turds, but, they have the talent to pen catchy tunes with pop culture referencing lyrics that keep them relevant.

One Fierce Beer Coaster has a few standout tracks, the aforementioned “I Wish I Was Queer So I Could Get Chicks”, “Lift Your Head Up High (And Blow Your Brains Out)”, a cover of Run DMC’s “It’s Tricky” and a collaboration on “Boom” with Vanilla Ice.

The album is light, it’s fun, it’s sophomoric…but I challenge anyone to listen to the album and not think that the music is well-made and the lyrics have a modicum of intelligence and wit.
