I don’t want to say that it’s ironic, because it isn’t. It’s unfortunate. A story about a rock musician that’s murdered and then comes back to avenge his death. They say the truth is stranger than fiction and in Brandon Lee’s case, they’re right.
I hadn’t heard of The Crow until news was plastered that Brandon Lee had been shot while filming a movie and rumors were flying around that they kept the original footage in the film. The actual footage had been destroyed, but that didn’t’ stop the internet from buzzing. A morbid curiosity followed the film’s release. I don’t remember seeing it in the movie theatre, but I do remember renting it one weekend from Prime Time Video.
I watched it 3 times in a row! Part of me wanted to see if the actual footage of Brandon Lee getting shot was still there and the other part of me thought the movie was amazing! It was the greatest thing I had seen in some time. It was stylistic, dark, and had a great soundtrack. At the time, I think I associated with Brandon Lee’s character…a bad-ass musician that wore leather, had long hair, leaped from rooftops, killed people in a fashionable style and had a murderous sarcasm about him. None of these qualities I possessed, but it was fun to dream about being a vigilante.
The soundtrack that accompanied the film was very well matched with the tone of the film. Playful and dark. It may have been a collection of B-Sides from many of the Alternative and Grunge acts from the mid-90s. Nine Inch Nails, Stone Temple Pilots, Helmet, and The Cure to name a few. This is a case where the whole is greater than the sum of all its parts. Would I listen to Jane Siberry’s “It Can’t Rain All The Time” by itself? No. But in the case of the album from start to finish, it works.
