It had been a while since I had been in a legit brick-and-mortar record store. A place where they primarily sell music in every conceivable form but digital. Somewhere you could wax intelligently on who the most talented Beatle was or argue with the store clerk trying to stop you from buying the 2010 remastered version of Nine Inch Nails’ Pretty Hate Machine.
In my most recent excursion I spent a lot of time in the “Bargain Bin” picking up albums from my youth that I never purchased and now they were affordable at 1/3rd the original release cost. I have varied taste in music and I picked out a bunch from all genres. Making my way up to the counter I thought the clerk was going to say something to the effect of, “Cool, you have an eclectic taste in music. I dig it.”
That was not to the be case this time around, all he said was, “Wow, you have a lot of Bargain Bin CDs.” Crushed me.
One of the CDs was Coldplay’s God Put a Smile Upon Your Face single. I already had A Rush of Blood to the Head but I picked this one up for the bonus tracks. As of late, I have left my completionist ways behind me and opted to stick to the albums instead of the singles…but…this disc had a live version of “Politik” (a banger in its own rite) and a cover of Echo & the Bunnymen’s “Lips Like Sugar”. I would have to agree with Chris Martin as he introduced it as “…one of the best songs ever, yeah?”
